Cast: Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, Vincent D’Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley Director: Craig Gillespie Language: English One click can change lives. One swipe can do that too. It all depends where the swipes and clicks are happening, Tinder, Instagram, or Stock Market. The title of Craig Gillespie’s new film is Dumb Money, so the clicks here have to do with the last option. One man, crazy (or as described as a schmuck in one scene) enough to buy the stocks of a company called GameStop in the middle of the pandemic. It changes his life, and many other lives too. The film is based on the book The Antisocial Network. There have been multiple financial scams and frauds that have wiped out lives and shattered dreams overnight, and Dumb Money attempts to shed light on the plight, with light-hearted touch and zany humour. At the heart of the story is Keith Gill, played by Paul Dano with the right amount of abandon to fit into the character. Just like The Wolf Of Wall Street, the tone of the narrative is largely filled with mirth, until things turn serious. Stock market is arguably the biggest gamble of them all, it can create millionaires but also flee with all your savings, leaving you penniless. The choice of the title is a supposed dig at what never stays permanent. If writers Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, and director Craig go for a sequel, they should title the film as Dumb People. Knowing the risk, we still invest our money into stocks. But then, one click can change lives. Rating: 3 (out of 5 stars)
