Are same-sex marriages legal in India? This question has finally been answered by the Supreme Court recently. The apex court of the country has denied legal recognition to people marrying same-sex partners. While the decision has a direct impact on the LGBTQ+ community, others have also something to say regarding the Supreme Court’s decision on the matter. Recently, Bollywood actress Celina Jaitly also shared her opinion on same-sex marriages during a recent interaction with India Today. She alleged that the LGBT+ community has only asked for the right which is already available to every other citizen of the country. Celina Jaitly further said that this Supreme Court verdict is disappointing, something she has been saying as an LGBT activist for the last two decades. “The marriage ruling (Supreme Court) is definitely a disappointment,” she mentioned. The actress also claimed that the right to be married and have a family is one of the most important rights for a human being. She further asserted that she hopes that Parliament will upgrade The Special Marriage Act, making it gender neutral. Jaitly also noted that the Supreme Court recorded a statement that it will remain committed towards the rights of the queer couples. The actress believed that this was a step in the correct direction. “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” she noted. Not just Celina Jaitly, but other Bollywood actors such as Bhumi Pednekar also lauded their voice on same-sex marriages. The Badaai Do actress took to her official Instagram handle, and wrote, “Equality for all because love is love." Supreme Court verdict on same-sex marriages The verdict on same-sex marriages was delivered by a five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court. The SC bench included Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli and PS Narasimha. The verdict was previously reserved on 11 May this year.
