CW has given out a pilot order for Ruby Rose-starrer Batwoman standalone series. The show has been in development for the 2019-20 TV season. The Australian actress, best known for her turn in smash hit series Orange is the New Black, first appeared as Batwoman in DC’s series crossover between network’s other DC Comics shows, Arrow, The Flash and
Supergirl titled Elseworlds. [caption id=“attachment_5834821” align=“alignnone” width=“825”] Ruby Rose as Batwoman. Twitter[/caption] The Batwoman series will potentially go on air in mid-2019 and is being
considered path-breaking since the Batman standalone show as it will be the first ever live action superhero series to be led by a lesbian character. However, after Rose was cast as the red-headed caped vigilante in August, the
actress was forced to quit Twitter following severe backlash from fans, criticising her for not being one in real life, despite the fact that Rose came out at the age of 12. Shortly before she deleted her account, Rose addressed the intense negativity and erroneous assumption that she was not gay. The show is being helmed by Emmy Award-winning Game of Thrones director David Nutter from a script penned by showrunner Caroline Dries. Nutter has previously helmed pilots for The CW’s The Flash and Arrow. Greg Berlanti will serve as the executive producer. According to
The Hollywood Reporter, the official synopsis for it is, “Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane [Rose] soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
Ruby Rose quit Twitter after she was trolled for playing a lesbian character in CW’s Batwoman series. Now, the network has given the show a go ahead.
