Batgirl: Justice League director Joss Whedon opts out of DC project saying, 'I really didn't have a story'

Joss Whedon, considered as the superhero genre’s maverick filmmaker and credited for Marvel Cinematic Universe’s staggering success by helming the first two Avengers movies, has exited the nascent DC Extended Universe project Batgirl, as reported by Variety. YouTube[/caption] Whedon has cited story issues as the reason for his departure. “Batgirl is such an exciting project and Warners/DC (are) such collaborative and supportive partners that it took me months to realise I really didn’t have a story,” Whedon said in a statement to Variety. The director had entered into his first collaboration with DC Films when he stepped in to take over the reigns of Justice League after DC regular Zack Snyder’s departure due to personal reasons. Whedon has thanked DC president Geoff Johns and Warners Picture Group president Toby Emmerich, saying, “I’m grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived and so understanding when I… uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed’?” The decision is said to be of a mutual nature between the studio and the director, as reported by IndieWire. Whedon’s departure has left Batgirl’s future uncertain, with high odds of the project being canned, as DC Films is busy concentrating on other female-led projects, like the sequel to their super hit _Wonder Woman_ with Gal Gadot, and another project titled _Gotham City Sirens_ starring Margot Robbie as the Harley Quinn character from Suicide Squad. Batgirl had no lead cast announced so far, albeit some clumsy attempts by Lindsay Lohan to catch Whedon’s attention for the role.    The dismal performance of _Justice League_ at the box office had also put the future of Batgirl under the studio scanner.
