As we draw the curtain of conclusion of 2024, the last Bollywood movie of the year is filled with action, romance, emotion and all that you need for a complete entertaining film. Hopefully this movie will give the numbers at the box-office that Bollywood desperately needs. It’s a remake of Atlee’s 2016 Tamil film Theri.
Filled with Atlee style, Varun Dhawan’s _Baby John_ is one of the most anticipated films of 2024. You can call this the best action film, but is that what the audiences need? The first half an hour the film is a bit of a stretch, then it gradually picks up. Varun Dhawan is a true mass hero whom we cannot fail to ignore. But the problem with this film is when you overdose the film with too much thrill, you stop relishing it. The father-daughter relationship of Khushi (Zyanna) and Baby John (Vaun Dhawan) is impressive. The movie has a decent backstory too.
Baby John starts with John D’Silva (Varun Dhawan), the owner of a bakery and a single dad to Khushi (Zara Zyanna) who drops her daughter to school every day. Khushi is late to school every single day. Tara (Wamiqa Gabbi) is her teacher, but both Tara and John has another identity and a backstory and that is the central point of the story.
But the real actor who has nailed the role of a villain is Jackie Shroff whom we cannot fail to ignore. He portrays the role of a repulsive looking minister who uses his power for his misdeeds. He kidnaps young girls on their way to school and uses them for flesh trade. He has all the qualities of a bad man with not even a tiniest bit of conscience and his son is a pedophile who rapes and then burns them alive.
_Baby John_ is no doubt engaging, but what the film lacks is crisp storytelling. All the performances are decent. But if you really love the smell of blood and the giggling of gun, this is indeed a film for you. The movie is pumped up with immense mass moments. Engaging and entertaining, but lacks fine storytelling which is the main requirement for an immersive film. And in no way is it a family movie and sometimes you may feel that it is a incomprehensible mess.
Varun Dhwan has done a good job as an action hero, the show stellar is undoubtedly Jackie Shroff, but Wamiqa Gabbi is hugely underused in the film. the biggest surprise indeed is Salman Khan’s cameo with his trademark swag. Making a masala film is also an art and when you have a tough competition from Pushpa 2 which is still reigning the big screens. The biggest low was the two hours 40 minutes runtime.
Baby John is Presented by Jio Studios, A For Apple, Cine1 Studios is released in Cinemas Near You.
