The world’s largest handset maker, Nokia, has announced a reorganisation of its sales team, which will be finished by the end of this year.
D Shivakumar, currently MD &VP, Nokia India, will now be heading the company’s operations in India, Middle East and Africa. Talking to CNBC TV18, Shivakumar said, the company’s operations will now be divided into four regions - America (north and south), Europe as one , Asia (China, South-East Asia, Australia and Japan) and India, Middle East and Africa as one.
The company also announced plans to close its manufacturing facilities in Europe and the US. Job cuts in both these regions will have minimal impact in India, Shivakumar said.
Talking specifically about the Chennai facility, Shivakumar said the unit, which started operations in 2006, has now become the world’s largest cell phone factory. It supplies phones to more than 50 countries, has investment of about $4,000, has generated direct employment for about 10,000 people and indirect employment for 100,000 people. This superior position will give the company an opportunity to build it as a super factory, he said.
