Kundakulam protestors roughed up, PIL seeks rethink on facilities: Reports

Protestors outside the Kudankulam nuclear plant were allegedly beaten up Thursday night. Among those roughed up were four disabled youth.

The row over the 2,000 MW nuclear plant is over villagers’ fears of a possible nuclear leak.

Earlier on Thursday, 700 protesters blocked roads and stopped scientists from entering the site.

Protests have escalated at the nuclear plant site with thousands continuing with their fast demanding the scrapping of the project.

Earlier, the Prime Minister had written to Jayalalithaa seeking resumption of work at the Rs 13, 000 crore nuclear plant. On Thursday, Jayalalithaa extended support to protesters, saying their sentiments would be respected.

Meanwhile, the crisis at the Kudankulam nuke plant keeps escalating. The Centre for Public interest Litigation today filed a PIL in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutional validity of the Nuclear Liability Act. The PIL has sought a reassessment of all nuclear facilities in India and their long-term cost benefit analysis.
