Even as many in Mumbai have been facing power cuts since Tuesday, Mumbaikars are not alone. There has been a countrywide power crisis - including in Delhi, which has been facing upto four hours of power cuts each day, and Karnataka - owing to coal shortage. Officials say it may take a couple more days to resolve the issue.
“A meeting with the state power department will be convened in a day or two to find out the gravity of the situation,” Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said Tuesday . Factors like ongoing protests in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh over separate statehood issue and power plants in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh unable to generate sufficient power due to coal shortage are resulting in the power shortage in the state, he said.
Delhi Power minister, Haroon Yusuf, said the power crisis in Delhi was because of Uttar Pradesh withdrawing more than it’s fair share from the northern grid and said Uttar Pradesh should be instructed to maintain strict grid discipline.
