Bangladesh’s central bank governor has resigned abruptly, just days after the country’s newly elected government assumed office, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, highlighting early signs of churn within Dhaka’s economic leadership.
Ahsan H. Mansur, Governor of Bangladesh Bank, told Bloomberg News that he had left his position after local television channels reported that the new administration was preparing to replace him.
“After seeing the TV news that I’m being replaced, I left the job,” Mansur said in a phone interview with Bloomberg News. “There are formalities remaining. I will do that later.”
The sudden resignation comes just days after the inauguration of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, whose Bangladesh Nationalist Party swept to power in the country’s first general election since the 2024 popular uprising.
Protest at central bank headquarters
The exact circumstances behind Mansur’s departure remain unclear. Earlier in the day, a small group of employees staged a protest at the central bank’s headquarters in Motijheel, Dhaka’s commercial district, accusing him of “authoritarianism” and demanding his resignation.
Protesters alleged that the governor had failed to address their “just demands,” though no specific grievances were publicly detailed.
Television footage showed Mansur leaving the central bank building shortly after the reports of his impending replacement surfaced.
Political transition and economic uncertainty
Mansur had taken over as the 13th governor of Bangladesh Bank in August 2024, at a time when the country was navigating deep political turbulence following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid widespread protests.
His tenure coincided with heightened economic pressures, including foreign exchange constraints, inflationary concerns and negotiations with multilateral lenders. While the new government has not formally announced his successor, the timing of the exit is likely to fuel speculation over policy continuity at a sensitive juncture for the economy.
