100 orders for BMW mini in a week but will this euphoria last?

Within a week’s time the BMW Mini has registered over 100 bookings. But with a steep price tag of Rs 24 to 32 lakh attached to this small car, how long will this initial euphoria last ?

India is the 100th market that the BMW’s iconic mini brand has entered with its Mini Cooper, Mini Cooper S, Cooper Convertible and the Cooper S Countryman. Though the first vehicle delivery will only happen in April, bookings have been on high-speed. They have received hundred orders in the first five days itself and if the pace keeps up the company could think of assembling cars in India at some later stage.

But in India, the Mini’s steep pricing of Rs 25 lakh for a small car could act as a speed breaker. If one looks at possible competitors, Volkswagen has managed to sell a mere 59 beetles in the first nine months of this fiscal year as against 332 in the last year, while Fiat has not sold a single Fiat 500 since April last year.
