Indeed there’s more hype to the car than the car itself, but Mercedes-AMG seems to be proving critics wrong with every tiny reveal of its upcoming hypercar. This hypercar, which is still two year away from reaching its customers, has already been sold out.

The car, which will be launched in 2018, is currently undergoing testing at the Nurburgring, and Mercedes-AMG decided to be a bit generous and reveal a rather interesting bit about the car, its powertrain.

We heard about the Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar’s powertrain in the past thanks to  Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers. But now, thanks to Mercedes, we have a cutaway that reveals the powertrain’s internals and it is surprisingly minimal.

For a hypercar that is expected to produce upwards of a 1,000 hp, it looks unbelievably minimal compared to say a Bugatti Chiron, which comes with plenty of heft to keep the car cool and composed at high speeds.

As is revealed from the cutaway image, components that make up the car’s powertrain are minimal. The engine sits really low in the middle with  F1-style pushrod suspension all round.

Motortalk.de got a closed tour of this beast of this hyper efficient powertrain. You can check out the video below.

We already know that power is said to be in the 1,000 bhp range and that the same will be derived from an F1 1.6-litre engine combined with electric motors.

Thanks to the image, the details get a bit more specific. Project One uses two electric motors to drive the front wheels. A third motors sits at the back and is connected to the crankshaft to provide extra power when needed at the rear. From what has been reported so far, the rear end alone (electrics motors + engine) can generate 730 hp. Combined with front electric motors, expect this to exceed 1,000 hp. Also, all of this has been achieved with a thermal efficiency of 43 percent (that is somewhat close to a Toyota Prius)!

And it’s not just the engine from an F1 car that will make it in this hypercar, but everything else as well, including the transmission, the MGU-H system which uses heat from the exhaust to create electrical energy, and a lot more besides. The car will be able to deliver 30 km of EV range with a kerb weight at 1,300 kg.

The car’s body will be made of carbon fibre and will be built keeping in mind the monocoque structure that is used in current F1 cars.

According to previous report from Autocar UK, AMG will build just 200 examples of this hypercar. Deliveries for this Mercedes-AMG hypercar will be begin in 2019.
