Major escalation in the Iran–Israel conflict:
Tensions between Iran and Israel erupted into open military confrontation following a dramatic escalation in hostilities. Israel launched a large-scale offensive—known as Operation Rising Lion—targeting over 100 Iranian sites, including nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan, as well as military installations near Tehran. The strikes reportedly killed several senior IRGC commanders and nuclear scientists. Covert drone and cyber operations, allegedly coordinated by Mossad, supported the assault.
Iran’s retaliation:
In retaliation, Iran initiated Operation True Promise III, unleashing hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones on key Israeli cities including Tel Aviv, Haifa and Petah Tikva. Although many projectiles were intercepted, some penetrated air defences, causing civilian casualties. Iran reported significant fatalities as a result of Israel’s air campaign, while Israel confirmed dozens of civilian deaths.
Widening conflict zones:
The conflict rapidly expanded. Israel claimed air superiority over parts of Iranian airspace and continued targeted strikes, while Iran sustained missile and drone attacks. The fighting extended across Iranian territory, central Israeli cities and vital maritime routes in the Red Sea and Persian Gulf.
Global repercussions:
The confrontation sent shockwaves through global markets, particularly affecting oil prices and prompting emergency meetings among Opec members. International bodies, including the G7 and the EU, called urgently for de-escalation. While the United States reaffirmed its support for Israel’s right to self-defence, it also expressed concern over the potential for a broader regional war. Western military forces were repositioned as a precautionary measure.
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, no ceasefire or resolution has been reached. The situation remains volatile, with both sides continuing operations and civilian casualties mounting.
