As the Russia-Ukraine war continues to escalate, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to both his Chinese and American counterparts Xi Jinping and Joe Biden respectively to attend the upcoming peace summit.
A meeting regarding the ongoing war is scheduled to take place in Switzerland in June and the main aim of the summit is the pile up pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. The international meeting has become more important in recent weeks as Russian forces have made significant advances on the battlefield.
Zelenskyy’s request
In a video statement which was recorded inside the charred remains of a printing press destroyed by the Russian forces on May 23, the Ukrainian leader maintained that the summit would “show who in the world really wants to end the war”.
“I am appealing to the leaders of the world who are still aside from the global efforts of the Global Peace Summit – to President Biden, the leader of the United States, and to President Xi, the leader of China,” Zelenskyy said in the video which was shared on his X profile.
For them, it is a pleasure to burn. We all know who we are dealing with. Russia is run by men who want to make it a norm – burning lives, destroying cities and villages, dividing people, and erasing national borders through war.

Zelenskyy’s appeal came two days after reports emerged that Putin is willing to halt the ravaging war in Ukraine. The Russian leader is inclined towards a negotiated ceasefire that recognises the current battlefield lines.
However, Zelenskyy and other Ukrainian officials maintained that a ceasefire would only help Russia to rearm and regroup. Last week, Zelenskyy maintained that it was crucial to get as many countries around the table at the peace talks as possible.
Russia won’t be able to deceive: Zelenskyy
In his speech, Zelenskyy slammed Russia and said that Moscow won’t be able to “deceive the world”. “For them, it is a pleasure to burn. We all know who we are dealing with. Russia is run by men who want to make it a norm – burning lives, destroying cities and villages, dividing people, and erasing national borders through war,” the Ukrainian leader averred.
“Does Russia want a dialogue? Ukraine has the world’s largest experience of lies from Russia during negotiations. And that’s exactly why global efforts are needed. The Global Peace Summit of the leaders whom Russia won’t be able to deceive,” he added. Zelenskyy also mentioned that eighty countries have already confirmed their participation in the summit.
