Zohran Mamdani celebrated his victory over Andrew Cuomo, the three-term former governor and son of a governor, after securing the mayoralty of New York City. Mamdani, a 34-year-old state lawmaker who identifies as a democratic socialist, becomes the city’s first Muslim mayor.
Mamdani delivered an unflinching attack on US President Donald Trump during his victory speech, portraying his triumph as a new “dawn” for New York City and a turning of the political tide. “We have toppled a political dynasty,” Mamdani said. “I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life. But let tonight be the final time I utter his name as we turn the page.”
“After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him… In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light,” he added.
In a full-throttle attack, he aimed his guns at the Republican leader, saying, “Donald Trump, since I know you are watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up.”
High turnout and diverse coalition propel Mamdani
The mayoral race, which saw the highest turnout in more than half a century, reflected voters’ concerns over cost-of-living issues, housing shortages, and economic inequality. Mamdani defeated former Governor Cuomo and Republican nominee Sliwa with 50.4 per cent of the vote to Cuomo’s 41.6 per cent, amounting to 1,036,051 votes versus 854,995. Sliwa received 7.1 per cent, or 146,137 votes.
Mamdani outlines key policies for New York City
Mamdani has detailed a series of policies aimed at addressing affordability and social welfare in New York City. He pledged to immediately freeze rent in rent-stabilised housing, which he says accommodates more than two million residents across the city.
In a bid to improve public transport, Mamdani announced plans to permanently eliminate fares on all city buses and increase their speed by rapidly constructing priority lanes.
Childcare is another focus of Mamdani’s platform. He plans to provide free childcare for every New Yorker aged six weeks to five years, while also raising wages for childcare workers to improve standards and accessibility.
