External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said that the BRICS originated when the G7 refused to admit new members and as the bloc evolved, it gained a life of its own and others recognised its value.

Speaking at the Global Center for Security Policy in Geneva, Jaishankar said, “…There was another club called G7 and you won’t let anyone else enter the club. So we went on to form our club…As it started it gained a life of its own over the period of time. Others saw value in it as well….”

Jaishankar began his two-day visit to Switzerland on Thursday by paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue in Geneva.

He arrived in Geneva from Germany on the final leg of his three-nation tour that also took him to Saudi Arabia.

“Started my visit to Geneva by paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi. In a world of polarisation and conflict, Bapu’s message of harmony and sustainability is more relevant than ever,” he said in a post on X.
