External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that US President Donald Trump will reshape the world order in the coming years.

At a discussion hosted by Observer Research Foundation (ORF), Jaishankar said that “you are going to get policies which will reshape the international order as we have got used to”.

Jaishanakar further said, “I’m not saying it’s good or bad. I’m just predicting what is to come and something big I think is coming at us.”

While Trump had always been a disruptor of domestic and international political systems, his second term has been much more disruptive. He has threatened allies with military invasions, has adopted expansionist agenda rivalling that of China or Russia, and floated plans that amount to ethnic cleansing — positions that would be unimaginable just a few electoral cycles back.

As for India, however, Jaishankar referred to the foreign ministers’ meeting of Quad members — the first multilateral engagement of the Trump administration. He indicated that he does not expect the Nato-like disruption in Quad. Trump, who has long been a critic of Nato, has said that he will tell Russia “to do whatever the hell they want” with allies if they don’t do his bidding. In what has been seen as a betrayal of the alliance, he has left European allies in the lurch in the face of Russian aggression.

Jaishankar said that he finds it “it very interesting that the first foreign policy engagement of this administration, consciously, was the Quad”.

In an apparent attempt at drawing a distinction with Nato, Jaishankar said, “What’s nice about the Quad? It has no overheads…Everyone comes, pays their bills, it’s fair. If we are looking at a different vision of architecture, a different sense of the power of the US.”
