US President Donald Trump has been playing around with the idea of Canada being the country’s 51st state. He has, in fact, been referring to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the “governor of Canada”. The banter has not been well received by the Canadian government and now has irked actor Jeff Douglas who went a step ahead in condemning Trump’s repeated comments by releasing a YouTube video where he recreated his iconic “Joe Canadian” character shot 25 years ago for Molson Beer.
“They (US) mistake our modesty for meekness, our kindness for consent, our nation for another star on their flag and our love of a hot cheesy poutine with their love of a hot cheesy Putin,” Douglas says in the video.

Created by a group of Canadian creatives who chose to remain anonymous, this remake brings back Douglas in his role as the energetic everyman.
“Are we perfect? No. But we are not the 51st anything,” the actor said in the video. The clip is a remake of Molson Canadian beer which aired in 2000.
The new version of the video showcases images of renowned Canadians, such as Terry Fox and Gordon Lightfoot, while also highlighting the nation’s resilience in the face of disaster.

Earlier this week, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly hit out at US President Donald Trump over his comment to make the country America’s ‘51st state’, saying that she takes his remarks “very seriously.”
In an interview with BBC, Joly said, “This is not a joke anymore. There’s a reason why Canadians, when they go out to a hockey game, are booing the American national anthem… We’re insulted. We’re mad. We’re angry.”
