“You are very famous,” newly-elected Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto told India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar as he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived for a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Brazil’s capital city Rio de Janeiro.

In the video, Subianto is seen greeting PM Modi and shaking hands with him. He then walks towards the entrance of the room to welcome EAM Jaishankar.

The EAM introduced himself to Subianto who is then heard saying: “I know you, you are very famous.”

The compliment prompted PM Modi to turn back, before taking his seat, and look towards Jaishankar and Subianto with a big smile.

Both Jaishankar and Subianto then shook hands before proceeding for the bilateral meeting.

It was the first bilateral meeting between PM Modi and the Indonesian President during which the Indian PM congratulated Subianto on his assumption of office.

Both the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties in the framework of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

“They discussed cooperation in the fields of trade and investment, defence and security, connectivity, tourism, health, and people-to-people ties. Both leaders noted that India and Indonesia are commemorating 75 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations and called for celebrating the occasion in a befitting manner,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

“The leaders also exchanged views on global and regional issues. Discussing their close collaboration within the G 20, they called for giving primacy to the concerns of the Global South. They also reviewed ongoing cooperation in multilateral and plurilateral arenas, including ASEAN,” the statement further said.

Earlier this month, a video of Subianto phone call congratulating Donald Trump on his US Presidential win went viral in which he called Trump “sir” multiple times.

“Wherever you are, I am willing to fly to congratulate you personally, sir,” Subianto told Trump.

Meanwhile, the US-President elect said he was “proud” of Subianto for doing a “great job” in Indonesia while praising his English.
