Amid the brewing tensions between Canada and the United States over the tariff debacle, Canadian NHL fans booed a singer while she was singing the American national anthem. The incident took place at the Ottawa Senators Game on Saturday night, just hours after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order and imposed a 25 per cent tariff on the country.

Hence, they booed and jeered after Canadian singer Mandia started singing “Star Spangled Banner” at the start of the game, which was followed by the Canadian national anthem ‘O, Canada’. Mandia had to ignore the loud boes as he sang the American national anthem to welcome the teams from both nations.

The Saturday game featured the home team Ottawa Senators facing off against the Minnesota Wild — with the home team routing the American visitor 6-0. Tensions between the three North American nations reached an all-time high after Trump imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Canada and Mexico for not addressing the issue of illegal immigrants and drugs infiltrating the American borders. The Trump administration imposed an additional 10 per cent tariff on China for the same reason, facing condemnation from all three nations.

Trudeau makes a ’tit for tat’ move.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that his country would impose 25 per cent tariffs against $155 billion worth of US goods as a retaliatory measure after Trump’s announcement. Trudeau spoke on the matter just hours after Trump signed the executive order, unleashing a new kind of tariff war.

As per the order, all Canadian goods would be subjected to a 25 per cent tariff except energy products which would face a 10 per cent tariff. While addressing a press conference on Saturday, the Canadian prime minister said that the tariffs on American goods include “immediate tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods as of Tuesday,” the day the US is set to begin collecting tariffs on Canadian goods. He insisted that the rest of the tariffs would come in about three weeks “to allow Canadian companies and supply chains to seek to find alternatives.”

“Like the American tariffs, our response will also be far-reaching and include everyday items such as American beer, wine and bourbon, fruits and fruit juices, including orange juice, along with vegetables, perfume, clothing and shoes,” the Canadian premier said. “It’ll include major consumer products like household appliances, furniture and sports equipment, and materials like lumber and plastics, along with much, much more,” he added.

Mexico soon followed suit and also announced retaliatory tariffs. Meanwhile, China’s Ministry of Commerce said that they will take the case to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), insisting that there are no winners in the tariff wars.
