'Credible information': US warns of attack in Sri Lanka, says popular tourist site potential target

The US Embassy Sri Lanka has issued a warning to American citizens in Sri Lanka based on ‘credible information’ warning of an attack on the island nation. Asked them not to travel to tourist locations in the Arugam Bay area

'Credible information': US warns of attack in Sri Lanka, says popular tourist site potential target

The United States has issued a warning to its citizen in Sri Lanka of a possible attack in the island nation, asking them to avoid travelling to tourists’ locations in the Arugam Bay area.

The US Embassy in Colombo alerted all American citizens in Sri Lanka soon after it received “credible information warning of an attack targeting popular tourist locations in the Arugam Bay area.”

Arugam Bay area is famous for beaches and surfing in Sri Lanka.

In a post on X, the US Embassy said also asked American citizens to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity to local authorities.

On its website, the US Embassy in Colombo said, “Due to the serious risk posed by this threat, the Embassy imposed a travel restriction on Embassy personnel for Arugam Bay effective immediately and until further notice.”

It has also asked Americans in Sri Lanka to be aware of their surroundings and always have some form on communication (including mobile phone) with themselves.

The US citizens have also been asked to constantly monitor local media for news and updates.

According to a report by ABC News, Sri Lanka has been listed as a “Level 2” nation in the US State Department risk advisory guide, with Americans visiting the nation being asked to “exercise increased caution.”

The State Department’s latest advisory for Sri Lanka, posted on October 2, noted that protests relating to the “economic and political situation in Sri Lanka can erupt at any time.”

“In some instances, police have used water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters. The US citizens are reminded to avoid all gatherings, even peaceful ones, that could turn violent with little or no warning,” the State Department said.

“Terrorist attacks have occurred in Sri Lanka, with little or no warning,” it said, adding that targets having included tourist hotspots, transportation hubs, shopping areas, government facilities and entertainment venues.
