The US State Department has instructed employees to report colleagues who display “anti-Christian bias” as the Trump administration implements an executive order to protect workers of Christian faith within the federal government.
A report by Politico says that the internal memo notes that the department will work with a task force and obtain information related to “anti-religious bias during the last presidential administration” and compile cases of anti-Christian bias reported through anonymous tips from employees.
“Reports should be as detailed as possible, including names, dates, locations (e.g. post or domestic office where the incident occurred,” the internal communication reads. The order further said that the task force will meet on April 22 to review its findings.
Several State Department officials responded to the cable with shock and concern, arguing that, despite any good intentions, it rests on a misguided assumption that the department is biased against Christians. They also cautioned that it risks fostering a culture of fear by encouraging staff to monitor and report on each other under pressure from the administration.
“My Administration will not tolerate anti-Christian weaponization of government or unlawful conduct targeting Christians. The law protects the freedom of Americans and groups of Americans to practice their faith in peace, and my Administration will enforce the law and protect these freedoms. My Administration will ensure that any unlawful and improper conduct, policies, or practices that target Christians are identified, terminated, and rectified,” Trump said in the executive order.

“Although the E.O. focuses on anti-Christian bias, targeting anyone for their religious beliefs is discriminatory and is contrary to the Constitution,” the notice added.
