The US had alerted Iran before bombing the country’s three nuclear sites and conveyed a message through back-channel discussions that these strikes “would be contained” and no more such actions were planned, CNN reported, citing two people familiar with the matter.
However, it was not immediately clear how the message was conveyed.
Experts believe the US wants to signal its desire to continue looking for a diplomatic solution and talks with the Iranian regime.
However, the US broadcaster quoted another top source as saying that further action against Iran would depend on how Tehran reacts to the bombing of its nuclear sites.
It is not clear whether Israel will continue launching airstrikes in Iran after the US targeted the Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz nuclear facilities.
Israeli officials have stated that destroying Iran’s nuclear programme is the main objective of their campaign, though some senior officials have also expressed intentions to topple the Iranian regime.
Israel has long anticipated significant Iranian retaliation if the US strikes Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Previously, officials told the broadcaster that they expected US involvement in strikes to deliver a decisive blow to Iran’s nuclear programme.

Iran’s nuclear agency confirms attack on three nuclear sites
The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran issued the statement after President Donald Trump announced the American attack on the facilities.
“The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran assures the great Iranian nation that despite the evil conspiracies of its enemies, with the efforts of thousands of its revolutionary and motivated scientists and experts, it will not allow the development of this national industry, which is the result of the blood of nuclear martyrs, to be stopped,” it said in its statement.
Earlier, Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency acknowledged an attack on the country’s Fordo nuclear site.
Attacks also targeted Isfahan and Natanz nuclear sites, it said.
