Pop star Taylor Swift’s endorsement may help Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in a close contest with Republican rival Donald Trump, according to a poll.
Shortly after the presidential debate between Harris and Trump last month, Swift endorsed Harris and urged unregistered Americans to register themselves as voters for the election in November. Swift is widely considered to be the most popular and successful music stars of all times.
Now, the Yahoo News/YouGov poll conducted earlier this month has said that while Swift’s endorsement is likely to have a minimal effect in bringing new voters to Harris’ fold, it may help with another crucial area: making Democrat-leaning young Americans register to vote for her.
Over the years, young Americans —who are more likely to be liberals than conservatives— have been notorious for not registering and not voting in elections.
The poll has found that while only 8 per cent of Americans say Swift’s endorsement made them more likely to vote for Harris, 11 per cent among Democrat-leaning unregistered Americans said it made them “much more likely” to register as a voter and then vote for Harris.
Taylor Swift’s endorsement may help Harris in close contest
In case of a close contest between Harris and Trump, Swift’s endorsement may come to Harris’ rescue.
Whenever a celebrity endorses someone in an election, the idea is more about making uncommitted voters commit to the candidate or making unregistered voters leaning towards the candidate register and cast their vote. This is where Swift is helping Harris.
The Yahoo News/YouGov poll found that 12 per cent of American eligible voters meet the following conditions: they view Harris favourably, they view Trump unfavourably, and they are not registered voters.

More ShortsThe survey found that 11 per cent of such eligible but unregistered voters said Swift’s endorsement makes them “much more likely” to vote for Harris.
While it might appear to be a tiny fraction of the US population, if they do end up registering to vote and if they do end up voting for Harris, then they would boost her support by up to 1 per cent, according to Yahoo News.
In a neck-to-neck contest that’s expected in November, an additional 1 per cent of vote could make the difference in favour of Harris.
Harris ahead of Trump in polls — again
Following last month’s debate in which Harris corned Trump and forced him on the defensive, she is ahead in the polls — again.
In days leading to the poll, The New York Times-Sienna College polls had found that Trump was ahead of Harris . It showed that while Trump had support of 48 per cent Americans, Harris polled 47 per cent support.
Now, Harris is ahead of Trump in the vast majority of polls compiled by the election data and analyses website FiveThirtyEight.
Overall, as of September 16, Harris has a 2.1 per cent lead over Trump in polls, according to FiveThirtyEight.
