UN Global Road Safety Week 2022: All you need to know about objective, history and significance

The UN Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW) is hosted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to highlight the benefits of low-speed limits on urban streets. It is a biennial global campaign that brings together various groups, NGOs, governments, corporations, and other organisations from all over the world. The special week is observed to raise awareness about road safety and highlights the changes required to reduce the number of road accidents and deaths. This year, the Global Road Safety Week will take place from 13 to 17 May 2022. The objectives behind this special week are to: - gather policy commitments at national and local levels to deliver 30 km/h speed limits in all urban areas - to create local support for such low-speed measures so that people live in a safe, healthy, green city. - to officially introduce the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 and its Global Plan for the world. How is the day celebrated? On this day, NGOs collaborate and work towards long-term commitments for 30 km/h limits at community, city, regional, and national levels. Many organisations also work to highlight evidence that maximum 30km/h speed limits can save the lives of pedestrians, cyclists, children, and the youth. History and significance Groups and organisations observing this week believe that low vehicular speed can save lives. They also state that 30 km/h (20 mph) speed limits where people and traffic mix are “streets for life”. The UN General Assembly has directed WHO and the UN regional commissions to conduct periodic UN Global Road Safety Weeks. These events focus on the links between 30 km/h speed limits and accomplishment of a number of Sustainable Development Goals, including those related to health, education, climate action, infrastructure and sustainable cities.
