UK’s Metropolitan police have recovered a Ferrari stolen from former Formula One driver Gerhard Berger nearly 28 years ago. The car, a Ferrari F512M, was taken alongside another sports car during the 1995 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Italy.
Authorities believe the stolen vehicle, a revamped version of Ferrari’s iconic Testarossa, was initially shipped to Japan after the theft. However, it resurfaced in the UK in late 2023, catching the attention of the Metropolitan Police in January of this year following a report from Ferrari.
An investigation led by PC Mike Pilbeam swiftly located the stolen Ferrari within four days, marking its return after being missing for nearly three decades. The effort involved collaboration with international partners, including Ferrari and law enforcement agencies worldwide, preventing the vehicle from leaving the country.
While the stolen Ferrari has been recovered, the whereabouts of the second stolen car remain unknown. No arrests have been made yet, but investigations are ongoing.
The Ferrari F512M was the final iteration of Ferrari’s renowned Testarossa, with approximately 500 units produced between 1994 and 1996. The Testarossa itself was Ferrari’s flagship model in the 1980s, achieving cultural significance and appearing in popular media such as the TV show Miami Vice.
Gerhard Berger, who notably raced for Scuderia Ferrari during his Formula One career, was among the prominent personalities who owned a Testarossa, alongside figures like Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson, and Elton John.
