Conservative Party leader Suella Braverman, who was fired as UK’s Home Secretary last year, apologised for her party’s performance in the 2024 General Elections despite her victory in the Fareham and Waterlooville seat, which considerably boosted the Tories.

On Friday, the Labour Party wrote its name in history after breaking the Rishi Sunak-led Conservative Party’s 14 years juggernaut. Keir Starmer is set to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

In an emotional speech right after the results were announced, Braverman said, “I am sorry that my party didn’t listen to you. The Conservative Party has let you down.”

“You - the Great British people voted for us over 14 years and we did not keep our promises. We’ve acted as if we’re entitled to your vote regardless of what we did, regardless of what we didn’t do, despite promising time after time that we would do those things and we need to learn our lesson because if we don’t, bad as tonight has been for my party, we’ll have many worse nights to come,” the former home secretary added.

Braverman’s big vistory

While the Tories’ performance did not translate into a victory, Braverman won big in her seat where she sought re-election.

Braverman, who is seen as a likely Tory leadership contender, won the Fareham and Waterlooville seat with a majority of just over 6,000. She bagged 17,561 votes.

UK General Election results

Keir Starmer on Friday will become Britain’s new prime minister, as his centre-left opposition Labour party swept to a landslide general election victory, ending 14 years of right-wing Conservative rule.

“The Labour Party has won this general election, and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory,” a sombre-looking Rishi Sunak said after he was re-elected to his seat.

“Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill on all sides,” the Tory leader added, calling the results “sobering” and saying he took responsibility for the defeat.

Labour raced past the 326 seats needed to secure an overall majority in the 650-seat parliament.

Sunak will tender his resignation to head of state King Charles III, with the monarch then asking Starmer, as the leader of the largest party in parliament, to form a government.
