UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday conceded defeat and apologised to the members of his Conservative Party for the poor show in the 2024 UK general elections.
Sunak has, however, retained his parliamentary seat - Richmond Northallerton and expressed his gratitude to the people of the constituency for his win.
“Since I moved here a decade ago, you have made me and my family feel so at home and I look to continue to serve as your member of parliament. It is an enormous privilege,” he said.
‘I take responsibility for the loss’
In his first reaction to the UK election result, Sunak said: “The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight. There is much to learn and reflect on, and I take responsibility for the loss.”
“The Labour party has won this general election, and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory,” he further said.
“Today power will change in a peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill from all sides. That is something that should give us all confidence in our country’s stability and future,” Sunak said.
‘I am sorry,’ says Sunak
“For the many good, hardworking Conservative candidates who lost tonight, despite their tireless efforts, their local records of delivery and their dedication to their communities, I am sorry,” Sunak said.
