The death toll in the Philippines from typhoons Trami and Kong-rey have surged to 139, said the authorities on Wednesday (October 31).

After battering the Philippines, the Kong-rey has now moved to Taiwan and is also expected to make landfall in China on Friday.

In the Philippines, around 115 people have been injured and 37 remain missing across the country since the storms began, according to Anadolu news agency.

Typhoon Trami, which made landfall in the Philippines last week, affected over 7 million and over 300,000 of them still remain in evacuation centres, as per the news agency.

Around 111,000 houses have been damaged across Philippines as storm-induced heavy rainfall and floods battered the country, said the agency.

Typhoon Kong-rey made landfall in Taiwan on Thursday afternoon and is expected to be the most powerful storm to hit the island in recent decades, with winds up to the speed of 126 miles per house expected to lash the self-ruling island, according to The New York Times.

As a precaution, the self-ruling island’s authorities have closed schools, offices, and financial markets, and have evacuated more than 8,000 of people and mobilised the military for relief and rescue efforts, according to The Times.

The entire Taiwan is under warnings and advisories have been issued for heavy rain and other extreme weather events.

The storm is also expected to make landfall in China on Friday and heavy rains are expected to lash several cities, including the financial hub of Shanghai, as per The Times.
