Two British men have been arrested for a mass stabbing on a train in eastern England on Sunday. Police have ruled out terrorism as a motive for the attack.
The suspects are a 32-year-old Black British man and a 35-year-old British national of Caribbean descent, both held on suspicion of attempted murder.
The brutal attack unfolded shortly after the service departed Peterborough station at approximately 7:30 pm local time. Ten people have so far been hospitalised after the attack, with nine of them reported to have life-threatening injuries.
The motive behind the attack still remains unclear as authorities launch an intensive investigation.
Survivors recall UK train horror
Eyewitness accounts painted a harrowing picture of the violence. One passenger, speaking to the media, described seeing a man with a large knife and recounted the sheer trauma, saying simply, “There was blood everywhere.”
In a rush to survive, many passengers sought refuge wherever they could, with some hiding in lavatories while others were “getting stamped on” in the frantic scramble to flee.
Another witness reported seeing a victim stagger through the carriage, crying out, “They have got a knife; I have been stabbed.” The initial chaos was heightened by screams, as one individual recalled hearing shouts of, “run, run, there’s a guy literally stabbing everyone.”
The British Transport Police (BTP) Chief Superintendent Chris Casey acknowledged the severity of the situation but cautioned against premature speculation, stating, “At this early stage it would not be appropriate to speculate on the causes of the incident.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer took to X (formerly Twitter) to call the incident “appalling” and offered his thoughts to all those affected, while thanking the emergency services for their rapid response.
