US President Donald Trump has confirmed watching China’s Victory Day parade, an event where the spotlight was stolen by President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.
When asked about his two cents on the parade, Trump said, “I thought it was very, very impressive, but I understood the reason they were doing it. And they were hoping I was watching — and I was watching."
He added, “My relationship with all of them (Xi, Putin and Kim) is very good. We are going to find out how good it is over the next week or two.”
Chinese President Xi Jinping has made the 80th anniversary of the war’s end a major showcase for his government and its close ties with countries at odds with Washington.
Japan’s invasion of China in 1937 was a major escalation in fighting that would lead to World War Two, and Japan’s surrender in 1945 marked the end of the conflict. The US joined the war in 1941, aiding Chinese forces fighting the Japanese military and playing a decisive role in Japan’s defeat.
Was Trump invited?
Reporters asked Potus whether he was invited to the lavish celebrations in Beijing, to which Trump said he would not have attended even if he had been.
“It wouldn’t have been my place,” the president said.
‘Should have mentioned US’
While he called the ceremony “beautiful”, Trump asserted, “I watched the speech last night. President Xi is a friend of mine, but I thought that the United States should have been mentioned last night during that speech, because we helped China very, very much.”
On the other hand, Trump also claimed that Xi, Putin and Kim "conspired against the US" during the parade as they were seen together.
