US President Donald Trump came to power with the promise to cut wasteful public expenditure, but his extravagant lifestyle is costing taxpayers several millions.
Since assuming office on January 20, Trump has vacationed nearly every weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort or one of his other expansive properties in the United States. He has played golf in all of these visits and these vacations for golf have cost US taxpayers several millions.
An estimate suggests that taxpayers have already shelled out $26 million for Trump’s golf holidays and are set to shell out much more for the rest of the year.
$26 already spent, $45 million allocated for just Florida golf course
Since Jan. 20, Trump has spent nearly every weekend playing golf. He has mostly played golf at Mar-a-Lago in Florida where he has vacationed nearly every weekend.
As per an analysis by HuffPost, Trump has so far played golf for 18 days since Jan. 20 and 14 of those days have been spent at Mar-a-Lago.
As per the expenditure details published in 2019, which are set to have grown now, these golf sessions have cost taxpayers at least $26 million — $26,127,531 to be precise. These costs comprise flying Trump, his family, and entourage in Air Force One, moving his motorcade around cities, and securing expansive golf courses. It is not just Secret Service that’s involved but local police forces are also forced to shell out to provide security during Trump’s vacations.
The police at Palm Beach, under whose jurisdiction Trump’s Florida’s resort falls, has sought $45 million in additional funds to provide security for the duration of Trump’s weekend getaways at the resort for the duration of March-November, according to Guardian.

In his first term, Trump played golf away for a total of 293 days and taxpayers paid $151.5 million for his sessions, according to HuffPost.
Notably, such extravagance has come despite Trump’s allies berating his predecessor, Joe Biden, for spending weekends towards the end of his term at his private homes in Delaware. However, those visits cost a fraction of Trump’s visit as he often used helicopters and smaller planes compared to Trump who uses the larger Air Force One jet nearly every weekend.
