President Donald Trump on Monday held a telephonic conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine, CNN quoted a White House spokeswoman as saying.

“President Trump just concluded a positive call with President Putin concerning Ukraine,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The call followed Trump’s meeting on Sunday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Mar-a-Lago, where the leaders discussed the conflict for three hours, although no major breakthrough was announced.

Trump had also spoken to Putin for more than an hour on Sunday before he met with Zelenskyy.

Leavitt did not immediately provide a detailed readout of the latest Trump-Putin conversation.

Leavitt’s statement came shortly after Moscow accused Kyiv of firing drones at Putin’s residence and announced that it would “revise” its negotiating position on ending the Ukraine war.

Zelenskyy, however, called Moscow’s claim a “lie” to justify fresh strikes on Kyiv.

“Another lie from the Russian Federation,” AFP quoted Zelenskyy as telling journalists. “They’re simply preparing the ground to carry out strikes, probably on the capital and probably on government buildings,” he said.

“Everyone needs to be alert now, absolutely everyone. A strike on the capital may be carried out, especially since this person (Putin)… said they will choose corresponding targets,” Zelenskyy added.
