Trump 'doesn't care what Europeans scream at US' about Greenland, says Vance

US Vice President JD Vance has said that the acquisition of Greenland is very much on the table and the United States does not care what Europe says about it.

Greenland is a Danish island that Trump and his allied have said should belong to the United States. Trump has threatened to invade Greenland to acquire it.

Greenland is one of the many overseas territories that Trump has threatened to acquire with the use of force. He has also threatened to invade Panama to take control of the Panama Canal and has said that Canada should cease to be an independent country become a US state instead.

In an interview with Fox News, Vance has said that Trump is not joking about acquring Greenland. When asked if he expects the United States to acquire Greenland, Vance said “I think it’s possible”.

Rationalising Trump’s expansionist streak by invoking national security, Vance said that the United States needs to have “more territorial interest” in Greenland as Denmark is not doing a good job managing the island and waters around it from Chinese and Russian influence.

“It’s really important to our national security. There are sea lanes there that the Chinese use, that the Russians use, that frankly, Denmark, which controls Greenland, it’s not doing its job and it’s not being a good ally. So you have to ask yourself, how are we going to solve that problem, solve our own national security? If that means that we need to take more territorial interest in Greenland, that is what President Trump is going to do, because he doesn’t care what the Europeans scream at us. He cares about putting the interests of America’s citizens first,” said Vance.

However, observers have said that Trump is driven more by interest in mining critical minerals, oil, and gas that might be there in Greenland or in waters around it instead of any security concerns. However, it is a fact that Greenland is strategically important to the United States as it is closer to the continental America than it is to Denmark in Europe and is on the shortest route to America from Europe and that Russia and China have been trying to make inroads into the region lately.

Vance went on to falsely claim that Greenland’s people “are not actually happy with Danish government”.

Last month, a survey reported that 85 per cent of Greenland's people do not want to join the United States .

Vance said that Greenland’s people want their natural resources to be extracted but Denmark is not letting that happen.

“You’ve got probably 55,000 people living on Greenland who are not actually happy with Danish government. They’ve got great natural resources there. They’ve got an incredibly bountiful country that the Danes aren’t letting them develop and explore. Of course, Donald Trump will take a different approach if he was the leader of Greenland,” said Vance.
