While addressing the media with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump offered to sell oil and gas to India. The prime minister is on a two-day visit to the US at the invitation of Trump, marking his first visit to the country after the Republican firebrand came back to power, last year.
Trump told the media that both he and PM Modi will discuss various topics, especially the US’s intention to sell oil and gas to India. “We have some very big things to talk about; they (India) are going to be purchasing a lot of our oil and gas: Trump at a meeting with Modi,” the president averred.

“We have more oil and gas than any other country; they (India) need it, and we have it: President Trump,” he added. “We are going to talk about trade. We are going to talk about many things. But it’s really an honour to see you, you have been my friend for a long time. Congratulations on having done a great job.”

During a joint press conference with Prime Minister Modi, Trump announced that the United States and India reached an important agreement on energy. “The Prime Minister and I also reached an important agreement on energy that will ensure the US to be the leading supplier of oil and natural gas to India, hopefully, the number 1 supplier,” the POTUS averred.

“In the groundbreaking development for the US nuclear industry, India is also reforming laws to welcome US nuclear technology, which is at the highest level in the Indian market,” he added. Meanwhile, PM Modi also delivered brief remarks in this regard. He said that both India and the US are working on a trade agreement which will be mutually beneficial for both nations.
“We will strengthen oil and gas trade to ensure India’s energy security. In the energy infrastructure, investment will increase. In the nuclear energy sector, we spoke about deepening our cooperation, in the direction of small modular reactors. America plays a key role in India’s defence preparedness,” the prime minister explained.
“As strategic and trusted partners, we are actively moving forward in the direction of joint development, joint production and transfer of technology. In the coming days, new technology and equipment will increase our capacity,” he furthered. Trump’s latest move can be seen as his way of competing with Russia, which continues to remain one of the major oil and gas exporters to India.
It is important to note that Russia is currently India’s largest oil supplier, with India importing a significant amount of crude oil from Russia, averaging around 1.7 million barrels per day, However, India does not import significant amounts of natural gas from Russia, making it an attractive market for the US. Amid the European sanctions on Russia due to the war in Ukraine, India managed to import oil at a much cheaper rate.
