Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday lauded the country’s latest advanced weapons, calling them faster, more efficient, and vital for maintaining national security and strategic balance.
He also said that their potential applications in areas such as rare metal extraction and future lunar missions.
Putin showcased the capabilities of the Burevestnik cruise missile and the Poseidon nuclear-powered torpedo at a ceremony held to honour the scientists and engineers behind their development.
“The result you have achieved has, with no exaggeration, historic significance for our people for ensuring security and strategic parity for decades to come and, we can boldly say, for the entire 21st century,” Reuters quoted Putin as saying in comments reported by Russian news agencies.
Last week, Putin announced that Russia had successfully tested the nuclear-capable Burevestnik (“Storm Petrel”) missile, claiming it could evade any existing defence system.
According to the chief of staff of Russia’s armed forces, the missile travelled 14,000 kms (8,700 miles) during the test.
At Tuesday’s ceremony, Putin praised the missile’s speed — over three times the speed of sound — and its compact nuclear propulsion system, which he said can be activated within seconds, much faster than conventional reactors.
He also noted that a Nato warship was nearby during the test.
Putin further highlighted the successful testing of the Poseidon nuclear-powered super torpedo, which military analysts believe could devastate coastal regions by generating massive radioactive ocean waves. He said the torpedo’s speed surpasses that of any surface vessel.
The Russian leader added that the small-scale nuclear technologies used in both the Burevestnik and Poseidon have broader applications, including Arctic operations, space exploration, and even the construction of a lunar base.
He also pointed to their potential in developing new energy sources for the extraction of rare metals.
In addition, Putin confirmed that Russia has begun mass production of the Oreshnik missile, which was reportedly first deployed in Ukraine in November 2024.
