US President Donald Trump on Monday said that “something good just may be happening” regarding efforts to end the war in Ukraine, a day after intensive talks between US and Ukrainian officials in Geneva, Switzerland.
“Is it really possible that big progress is being made in Peace Talks between Russia and Ukraine??? Don’t believe it until you see it, but something good just may be happening,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding, “GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
The United States and Ukraine continued work in Switzerland on Monday to develop a mutually acceptable pace plan after modifying an earlier proposal that had been seen as too favourable to Moscow.
Washington and Kyiv said in a joint statement that they had drafted a “refined peace framework” after the first day of talks, though they did not provide specifics.
After a full day of negotiations in Geneva on Sunday, US officials expressed cautious optimism that progress could be achieved in ending the war.
It marks a change in tone since Sunday when the US president said Ukraine had shown “zero gratitude” for American efforts over the war, prompting Ukrainian officials to emphasise their thanks for his support.

View All28-point peace plan
The United States blindsided Kyiv and European countries last week with a 28-point peace plan, giving Ukraine until Thursday to agree to a framework aimed at ending Europe’s deadliest war since World War II.
After Sunday’s talks, no public statement clarified how the revised plan would address contentious issues such as guaranteeing Ukraine’s security against future Russian threats or funding the country’s rebuilding.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said negotiations were ongoing, while the Kremlin confirmed nothing had officially been conveyed to Russia.
“We all continue working with partners, especially the United States, to look for compromises that will strengthen but not weaken us,” Zelenskyy said via video link from a summit of Ukraine’s allies in Sweden.
Zelenskyy emphasised that Russia must pay for the war and that a decision on using frozen Russian assets was crucial.
“Right now, we are at a critical moment, and we are working with the United States, European partners, and many others to define steps that can end Russia’s war against us, against Ukraine, and bring real security,”
President Trump has continued pressuring Ukraine to reach a deal. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who led the American delegation in Sunday’s talks, indicated the Thursday deadline “might not be set in stone.”
Zelenskyy faces heightened domestic pressure after a corruption scandal led to the dismissal of two ministers, raising questions about his ability to secure public support for a deal that could be seen as compromising Ukrainian interests.
According to an Irish Times report, citing sources, the Ukrainian leader could travel to the United States as soon as this week to discuss sensitive aspects of the plan with Trump.
The initial 28-point proposal called on Ukraine to cede territory, accept limits on its military, and abandon Nato ambitions — Russian demands that Kyiv has long rejected.
Zelenskyy awaiting ‘full report’ on talks
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy has confirmed that his delegation is returning from Geneva, Switzerland, where they held talks with US representatives on a proposed plan to end the war in Ukraine.
He said he expects a “full report” on the negotiations later today.
“Based on these reports, we will determine the next steps and the timing. We will continue coordinating with Europe and other partners around the world. We count on achieving the necessary results, and I thank everyone who stands with Ukraine,” Zelensky posted on X.
He also spoke by phone with Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, thanking him for advice and support. “Norway, as always, is helping,” Zelenskyy said.
