'False and fabricated': Sheikh Hasina's son rebuffs reports of her resignation statement blaming US

Hours after Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s accusation of the US’s involvement in her ousting stirred major headlines, her son Sajeeb Wazed claimed that the statement attributed to her is “false and fabricated”. Wazed took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to clarify that her mother did not make any statements before or since leaving Dhaka.

Earlier today, several reports suggested that the erstwhile premier of Bangladesh claimed that she would have remained in power if she gave away St Martin's Island to the United States. It was reported that Hasina hurled these accusations in an undelivered speech which was obtained by The Economic Times.

“The recent resignation statement attributed to my mother published in a newspaper is completely false and fabricated,” Wazed wrote on X, on Sunday evening. “I have just confirmed with her that she did not make any statement either before or since leaving Dhaka,” he furthered.

What was the alleged statement made by Hasina?

Earlier today multiple reports suggested that the Bangladeshi politician who is currently residing in a safe house in India accused the US of ousting her from power because she refused to hand over St Martin’s Island. As per the reports, Hasina allegedly made those remarks in an “undelivered speech” which she wanted to give before she was forced to resign.

“I could have remained in power if I had left St. Martin’s and the Bay of Bengal to America,” said the statements attributed to Hasina. It is pertinent to note that Hasina resigned and fled from Dhaka following nationwide protests over a controversial quota system proposed by her government.
