Sheikh Hasina will be in Bangladesh moment elections are announced, says son

Ousted PM Sheikh Hasina who fled to India on August 5 will return to Bangladesh “the moment” the interim government led by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus decided to hold election in the country.

Yunus took oath as the head of Bangladesh interim government on Thursday (August 8). He is tasked with holding elections in the country after Hasina led government collapsed soon after she resigned and left the country.

Hasina-led Awami League party is not a part of the interim government.

Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy said that his mother is not planning of seeking any asylum in any country and is in India for the time being.

“For the time being, she (Hasina) is in India. She will go back to Bangladesh the moment the interim government decides to hold an election in the country,” Joy was quoted as saying by Times of India.

He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “saving” his mother’s life at “such short notice.”

Hasina is reportedly sheltering in a safe house in New Delhi. After fleeing from Bangladesh on Monday afternoon, she landed at Hindon airbase of the Indian Air Force in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad, which is very close to the national capital.

As per reports, Hasina was seeking political asylum in Britain, but the UK Home Office declined saying it does not allow entry for those seeking asylum or temporary refuge.

On Thursday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said spoke with his British counterpart about Bangladesh but did not share any details.

Meanwhile, Hasina’s son, who is in the US, has said that he is ready to enter into politics. He had earlier told that he had no intention to get into politics.

“I will do whatever it takes to save the party and its workers. If there is a need for me to join politics, I will not refrain from that. My mother would have retired from politics after the current term. I never had any political ambition and was settled in the US. But the developments in Bangladesh in the past few days show that there is a leadership vacuum. I had to get active for the sake of the party and I am at the forefront now," Joy was quoted as saying by ToI.
