Britain’s chief defence on Sunday said that the Russian Army suffered a loss of 1,500 dead and injured in October alone as a result of the Ukraine war.
Talking to BBC, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said that Russians are paying an “extraordinary price” owing to President Vladimir Putin’s invasion and that the country bore the worst loss in October since the war began in 2022.
“Russia is about to suffer 700,000 people killed or wounded - the enormous pain and suffering that the Russian nation is having to bear because of Putin’s ambition,” the chief of defence staff said.
Radakin said that Russia’s gains are only worth “for tiny increments of land”. It is, however, putting immense pressure on Ukraine.
He stated that the war, consuming over 40 per cent of public spending on defense and security, is also “a significant burden” on Russia.
Situation remains ‘challenging’
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s top commander Col Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi has said that the situation in Ukraine continues to remain “challenging” and that there are “signs of escalation”.
“The enemy, leveraging its numerical advantage, is continuing offensive actions and is focusing its main efforts on the Pokrovsk and Kurakhove directions,” he said.
Largest attack on Moscow
Russia downed 34 Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow on Sunday, the defence ministry said, in the largest attack on the capital since Russia began its offensive in Ukraine in 2022.
The attack, which forced the temporary closure of three Moscow airports, injured a 52-year-old woman and set two homes on fire in the village of Stanovoye in the Moscow region, officials said.
The defence ministry said Russia’s air defence had downed a total of 70 Ukrainian drones between 0400 GMT and 0700 GMT over six regions.
It said 34 were downed over the Moscow region and the rest over Bryansk, Orlov, Kaluga, Tula and Kursk.
