Russia has unveiled a new nuclear submarine, Khabarovsk, built to carry the Poseidon underwater nuclear drone — a weapon some officials have called a “doomsday missile” capable of devastating coastal nations. The vessel was launched at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk during a ceremony led by Defence Minister Andrei Belousov.

Russia has launched a new nuclear submarine designed to carry the underwater nuclear drone known as Poseidon — dubbed a “doomsday missile” by some officials, news agency Reuters reported.

According to comments reported in the media, it is capable of “wiping out” entire coastal nations.

The Khabarovsk was ceremonially launched at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk by Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, in the presence of Russian Naval Chief Admiral Alexander Moiseyev and senior shipbuilding officials. “Today marks a significant event for us — the heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Khabarovsk is being launched from the stern of the renowned Sevmash,” Belousov said in televised remarks.

Built for advanced underwater warfare

Sevmash — the same yard that retrofitted India’s aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya — built the submarine to carry underwater weapons and robotic systems, according to the Russian Defence Ministry.

The Khabarovsk was designed by Rubin, the Central Design Bureau of Marine Engineering, and is intended to fulfil a range of naval missions using modern underwater weapons.

Russian state media TASS quoted the defence minister as saying the submarine will bolster the country’s ability to secure its maritime borders and safeguard its national interests across global waters.

Russian Business daily Kommersant reported that Khabarovsk-class submarines are expected to serve as the primary carriers of the Poseidon system.

Testing the Poseidon drone

Last week, Russia announced the successful testing of a Poseidon underwater drone equipped with a nuclear propulsion system.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the drone was launched from a “mother submarine” and features a compact nuclear reactor, reportedly much smaller than that used in strategic submarines.

‘Doomsday missile’ amid global concerns

Senior Russian officials have described the Poseidon in stark terms. Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, has referred to it as a “doomsday missile,” while Andrei Kartapolov, chair of the Duma Defence Committee, claimed it could “wipe out” entire coastal nations.

Outside Russia, experts have questioned the credibility of Moscow’s claims regarding the Poseidon’s range and destructive power.

Nonetheless, statements from Kremlin and reports from the Russian media coverage underline that Moscow views the weapon as a major strategic addition to its naval arsenal.
