Amid signs of a thaw in India-China relations following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tianjin for the SCO Summit, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said on Friday (November 7, 2025) that Beijing has expressed willingness to ease tensions and resolve issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) through dialogue.
In an exclusive conversation with Network18 Group Editor-in-Chief Rahul Joshi, Singh said, “There has been de-escalation at several points. You must have seen China’s statement where they said they want to normalise the situation with India at the LAC.”
Singh added that during his “very good discussions” with Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun on the sidelines of the 12th ADMM-Plus meeting in Kuala Lumpur, both sides agreed to maintain military-to-military talks to prevent any future flare-ups.
India-China ties had hit a low after the deadly 2020 clashes in eastern Ladakh that left 20 Indian soldiers dead. However, recent high-level engagements — including Modi’s meeting with President Xi Jinping at the 2024 BRICS Summit in Kazan — have revived efforts to restore peace along the border and reopen channels for boundary dialogue.
When asked if India could trust Beijing’s recent assurances, Singh replied, “They have said it, and we (India) have also agreed on this. When I went to the SCO meeting in Shanghai, I told the Chinese Defence Minister clearly that the ice on India-China ties should melt — how long will the ice remain? There should be a clear decision on this.”
