The Kremlin on Thursday said that Russian President Vladimir Putin told US counterpart Donald Trump that Moscow will not “give up” on its goals in Ukraine, while pledging it will also keep up a negotiating process on the conflict.
The two leaders spoke for nearly an hour, stating their intention to “seek a negotiated solution” on Ukraine and Trump “raising issue of bringing Ukraine conflict to swift halt.”
“Our president said that Russia will achieve the aims it set, that is to say the root causes that led to the current state of affairs,” AFP quoted Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov as telling reporters.
“Russia will not give up on these aims,” he added.
“He also spoke of the readiness of the Russian side to continue the negotiation process,” Ushakov added.
During the call, Putin reiterated that “peace talks on Ukraine are a matter between Moscow and Kyiv.”
Putin briefed Trump on the implementation of agreements reached between Russia and Ukraine last month to exchange prisoners-of-war and dead soldiers, Reuters quoted Ushakov as saying.
Putin and Trump did not discuss the recent pause in some US weapons deliveries to Ukraine, added the report.
The two leaders also held a “detailed discussion” on Iran and the broader Middle East and agreed to continue their dialogue in the future.
“From the Russian side, the importance of settling all disputed issues, disagreements and conflictual situations be solved exclusively by politico-diplomatic means was stressed,” Ushakov said.
