US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday aimed at reducing the cost of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and directed the government to expand access to the fertility treatment, making the facility more affordable across the country. However, the order did not address how the costs would be covered.

The order directs Trump’s domestic policy chief to produce a list of policy recommendations that protect IVF access and cut costs for individuals within 90 days.

“It is the policy of my administration to ensure reliable access to IVF treatment, including by easing unnecessary statutory or regulatory burdens to make IVF treatment drastically more affordable,” the order said.

Promises made. Promises kept

“Promises made. Promises kept: President Trump just signed an executive order to expand access to IVF!", White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a post on X.

Leavitt said, “The order directs policy recommendations to protect IVF access and aggressively reduce out-of-pocket and health plan costs for such treatments.” The administration seeks to expand fertility treatment access while easing financial burdens on families struggling with infertility.

During his presidential campaign, Trump pledged that IVF treatments would be either covered by the government or insurance companies.

Trump’s plan to provide free IVF

During the campaign, Trump proposed a plan to provide free in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatments, a policy estimated to potentially cost up to $7 billion annually, the New York Post reported.

This initiative aimed to support individuals and couples facing infertility challenges.

However, during the 2024 campaign, Trump’s position on abortion appeared to shift. He rejected the idea of a federal abortion ban and emphasised that abortion policy should be determined by individual states.

Trump’s appointment in Supreme court and Roe vs Wade

Trump has been a vocal opponent of abortion. During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump advocated for banning abortion and said that women who undergo the procedure should face “some form of punishment.”

During his previous term as US president, he appointed three Supreme Court justices, which led to the 2022 overturning of Roe vs Wade, a ruling that had federally protected abortion rights for nearly five decades.
