‘Tragic loss’: PM Modi recalls meeting Khaleda Zia in Dhaka in his condolence message

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reacted to the death of former Bangladesh prime minister Khaleda Zia, recalling her role in strengthening India-Bangladesh relations. Mourning the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) chairperson, PM Modi said he was “deeply saddened” by her passing.

Deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka.

Our sincerest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss.

‘Deeply saddened’, says PM Modi

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka. Our sincerest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss.”

PM Modi recalls 2015 meeting

The Prime Minister also recalled meeting Khaleda Zia in Dhaka in 2015, a year after he took office. “I recall my warm meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015. We hope that her vision and legacy will continue to guide our partnership. May her soul rest in peace,” he wrote.

PM Modi further acknowledged Khaleda Zia’s role in fostering diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh, saying her important contributions would always be remembered.

Khaleda Zia passes away at 80

Bangladesh’s first woman prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia died at the age of 80 on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment at Dhaka’s Apollo Hospital, the party said.

In a brief statement, the BNP confirmed that the veteran leader passed away after battling multiple health complications.

Earlier in December, PM Modi had expressed concern over Khaleda Zia’s health and assured Bangladesh that India was ready to extend all possible support in whatever way it could.
