Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Mauritius President Dharam Gokhool on Tuesday and presented him with Gangajal from the Maha Kumbh.
Modi, who arrived in Mauritius for a two-day state visit, also gifted Gokhool several other items. Earlier, he met Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, and the two leaders planted a sapling at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden.
PM also gifted makhana- a super food from Bihar, to the Mauritius President and the Banarasi saree to his wife.
His Mauritius counterpart Ramgoolam and other leaders gave a ceremonial welcome, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.“This shows the strong relationship of India and Mauritius,” he posted on X.
After paying homage to Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, Modi met the President and will participate in the State lunch, Jaiswal said.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi attended the Mauritius National Day celebrations as the Chief Guest, underlining the strong diplomatic and cultural ties between the two nations. During a special lunch hosted by President Gokhool, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality and reaffirmed India’s commitment to its enduring partnership with Mauritius. He described the event not just as a meal but as a symbol of the vibrant and close ties between the two countries.
Earlier in the day Prime Minister Modi received a traditional Bihari welcome in Mauritius with a “geet gawai” programme hosted in his honour.‘Geet gawain’ is a traditional Bhojpuri musical ensemble that embodies the rich cultural heritage brought to Mauritius by women from the Bhojpuri belt of India.
