PM Modi, Belgium King Philippe discuss strengthening bilateral ties amid extradition talks for Mehul Choksi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday had a phone conversation with King Philippe of Belgium during which they discussed enhancing bilateral ties, increasing trade and investment, and promoting collaboration in innovation and sustainability between their countries.

Taking to X, PM Modi said, “It was a pleasure to speak with HM King Philippe of Belgium. Appreciated the recent Belgian Economic Mission to India led by HRH Princess Astrid."

“We discussed deepening our strong bilateral ties, boosting trade and investment, and advancing collaboration in innovation sustainability,” he added.

According to Associated Press, the discussions between PM Modi and King Philippe come as Indian authorities have asked their Belgian counterparts to begin the extradition process for fugitive Indian businessman Mehul Choksi, who is currently in Belgium.

Choksi’s newly acquired Belgian residency complicates the situation, allowing him to travel freely between European nations and obstructing efforts to return him to India for trial.

Moreover, Choksi is reportedly planning to relocate to Switzerland for medical treatment at the Hirslanden Klinik Aarau, a renowned cancer hospital.

This move is viewed as another tactic to delay his extradition under the guise of humanitarian reasons.
