Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday morning to a grand welcome led by Mauritian PM Navin Ramgoolam.
Ramgoolam was joined by Deputy PM Paul Raymond Berenger, Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful, National Assembly Speaker Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra, Leader of the Opposition Pierre Lesjongard, and Chief Justice Rehana Mungly-Gulbul, among others, in welcoming Modi with a garland at around 6 am local time.
Modi is in Mauritius on a two-day state visit in which he will participate in the country’s national day celebrations as the chief guest and meet the nation’s top leaders.
Overall, around 200 people joined Ramgoolam in welcoming Modi that including memberse of parliament, politicians from across the aisle, diplomats, and religious leaders in the country.
In a post on X, Modi said he was “grateful” for the “special gesture” of the welcome at the airport. He said that he will meet President Dharam Gokhool and hold deliberations with Ramgoolam later in the day and also addressing a community programme in the evening.
Earlier, Modi had called Mauritius “a key Indian Ocean partner” and said the visit will “further strengthen the foundations of our friendship”.
During the visit, Modi will inaugurate over 20 India-funded projects in Mauritius, ranging from capacity-building to community-linked infrastructure, and announce new major infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening democracy, according to CNN-News 18.
