Police in Pakistan saved a woman who was attacked by a mob for donning an Arabic-printed kurta. The woman, who was accused of blasphemy, was surrounded by protestors when she went to a Lahore eatery with her spouse while donning an Arabic-printed kurta that some mistakenly believed contained passages from the Quran.
When patrons at the restaurant demanded that the woman remove her kurta, the police were summoned, and the woman was saved.
The police released a video of the woman concealing her face with her hands while protesters surrounded her and yelled at her.
The female cop who attempted to calm down the crowd and remove the woman from the restaurant was also commended by the police.
Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi was seen pleading with the crowd not to use violence in the footage.
“The woman and her husband had gone shopping. There were some words inscribed on the kurta that she had worn. She was requested to take off the kurta by some persons who noticed it. Confusion existed,” Naqvi remarked.
The woman later apologized for offending religious feelings when she was brought to the police station.
“I had no intentions of insulting anyone’s religious sentiments. I bought the kurta just because it had good design,” the woman told the media.
