Acknowledging Navinchandra Ramgoolam’s leadership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that ties between India and Mauritius under the Mauritian Prime Minister have reached new heights in all areas.

Addressing a banquet hosted by PM Ramgoolam on Tuesday, PM Modi said, “The partnership between India and Mauritius is not just limited to historical ties but is also based on shared values, trust…You (Mauritius PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam) have always led our relations and based on this leadership our partnership is reaching new heights in all areas…Together we are working on important infrastructure projects which are leaving a mark on development in Mauritius…We have always stood by each other like a family in challenging times….”
PM Modi emphasised Mauritius’ significance as a close maritime neighbour and an important partner in the Indian Ocean region.
He called for countries of the Global South to unite and raise their voices collectively.

Speaking about India’s G20 presidency, PM Modi said, “We prioritised the interests of the Global South and invited Mauritius as our special guest.”
“There is no limit to our friendship,” he added.
PM Modi said that a visit to Mauritius is always very special for any Indian Prime Minister and that it is not just a political visit but an opportunity to meet one’s family.
“…I express my heartfelt gratitude to the Prime Minister, the Government of Mauritius and the people of Mauritius for the grand welcome and hospitality I received in Mauritius. A visit to Mauritius is always very special for any Indian Prime Minister. It is not just a political visit but an opportunity to meet one’s family… It is a matter of good fortune for me that, once again I am participating as the chief guest on the occasion of Mauritius’ National Day. On this occasion, I extend my heartfelt best wishes to all of you on behalf of 140 crore Indians…,” said the Prime Minister.
Earlier, PM Ramgoolam expressed his immense pride and honor at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attendance at the country’s National Day celebrations, despite his busy schedule.

Ramgoolam said that PM Modi’s presence is a testament to his deep connection with Mauritius.
“I am immensely proud and honoured, Prime Minister, that you have accepted my invitation to grace our National Day celebrations with your presence despite your very heavy schedule. It is a testimony of your deep feelings for Mauritius…,” said the Mauritian PM.
Reflecting on their longstanding relationship, Ramgoolam recalled the privilege of being invited to PM Modi’s first swearing-in ceremony in 2014, expressing hope for a similar invitation to PM Modi’s fourth swearing-in.
“On a personal note, I recall with great pride and a sense of profound gratitude the unique privilege you so kindly honoured me with by inviting me to your first swearing-in ceremony as Prime Minister of India in 2014. I am hopeful that you will invite me for the fourth swearing-in as well…,” he added.
PM Modi is on a two-day state visit to the island nation.
