The Israeli military announced that one of the four bodies Hamas sent on Tuesday night was not a match for any of the hostages, according to examinations conducted at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine.
The other three bodies were confirmed to be those of Israeli individuals taken into Gaza. Here are the details known about the three confirmed victims:
Uriel Baruch (35): Abducted from the Nova music festival. The father-of-two was killed on October 7, 2023, and his body taken to Gaza, a fact his family was notified of by the military in March 2024.
Tamir Nimrodi (20): An education officer at the Erez Crossing. He was abducted on October 7, 2023, with his fate unknown until his body was formally identified after being returned. His family stated he was “murdered in Hamas captivity.”
Eitan Levi (53): A taxi driver from Bat Yam who was killed by Hamas gunmen near the Gaza perimeter on October 7, 2023, while driving a friend. His body was subsequently taken into Gaza.
Prior to the current truce, it was estimated that the bodies of 28 deceased Israeli hostages were still being held in Gaza. Following the release of all 20 living hostages on Monday, the focus shifted to the deceased.
Hamas initially returned four bodies on Monday, who were later identified as Guy Illouz, Bipin Joshi, Yossi Sharabi, and Daniel Peretz. On Tuesday, Hamas handed over four more bodies, but Israel has since announced that only three were hostages—Uriel Baruch, Tamir Nimrodi, and Eitan Levi—while the fourth was determined to be a Palestinian from Gaza.
This means a total of seven bodies of deceased Israeli hostages have been returned to Israel so far.
Consequently, it is now believed that the bodies of 21 deceased Israeli hostages remain in Gaza. While the peace plan’s first phase included a deadline for the return of all hostages, the ceasefire agreement had provided a mechanism acknowledging that finding and returning all bodies could take time due to the destruction in Gaza.
